Box Elder Tree: Identification, Characteristics & Uses

Box Elder

Box Elder

Box Elder, or Ash-leaved Maple, a hardy species of maple tree native to eastern and central temperate North America. The leaves, unlike those of other maples, are compound, having several leaflets growing from a single stem. The box elder reaches a height of 50 feet (15 m) and has a very rapid growth. It is used as a windbreak and as an ornamental tree. The wood, soft and rather brittle, is of little value.

The box elder is Acer negundo of the family Aceraceae.
