Cinchona
Cinchona, a large genus of evergreen trees. They grow on the eastern slopes of the Andes in South America, from Colombia to Peru. There are about 70 species, some of which are valuable for the quinine derived from their bark. The trees bear fragrant purple or rose blossoms, similar to those of the lilac. The bark is sometimes called Peruvian fever bark.
Cinchonas belong to the family Rubiaceae; Cinchona ledgeriana is a common variety.
