Kentucky coffeetree
Kentucky Coffee Tree, an attractive tree native to southeastern Canada and the eastern United States. It is also called the nicker tree and the chicot. The tree grows to 100 feet (30 m) tall and bears long clusters of white flowers shaped like those of the sweet pea. The fruits are long, leathery pods containing beanlike seeds. In earlier times the seeds were roasted and used as a substitute for coffee.
The Kentucky coffee tree is Gymnocladus dioica of the pea family, Leguminosae.
