Mistral
Mistral, a strong, dry, cold wind that blows from the uplands of southern France to the Mediterranean Sea. The mistral is prevalent during winter and is caused by low atmospheric pressure over the western Mediterranean drawing colder air from the north. Its most common course is down the Rhone valley past Marseille to the Gulf of Lions. Similar winds, such as the bora, occur in other parts of the Mediterranean basin.
