Horse Latitudes

Horse Latitudes, subtropical belts of high atmospheric pressure at about 30 latitude in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. They are regions of stable weather—usually calm, sunny, dry, and windless.

The name horse latitudes probably originated during a period when horses were being shipped from New England to the West Indies. The term was applied to a part of the North Atlantic Ocean where sailing ships were becalmed for long periods of time. Frequently, the horses died of heat and thirst and were thrown overboard.
