Le Conte, Joseph

Le Conte, Joseph (1823-1901). a United States geologist. Le Conte was born in Liberty County, Georgia. In 1845 he received a medical degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. After practicing medicine briefly, Le Conte studied geology under Louis Agassiz. From 1851 to 1869 he taught at several Southern colleges. In 1869 he joined the faculty of the University of California.

His Elements of Geology (1878) was a popular text. He also wrote books on general sciences and philosophy.
