Winchell, Alexander
Winchell, Alexander (1824–1891), a United States geologist. His lectures and writings acquainted many people in the United States with new developments in science. Winchell's interests ranged from zoology and botany to mathematics. He accepted Darwin's theory of evolution and did much to show that it did not conflict with most religious beliefs. Winchell was born in Dutchess County, New York. He taught at the University of Michigan during 1853–73 and from 1879 until his death.
