Mawson, Sir Douglas
Mawson, Sir Douglas (1882-1958), an Australian explorer of the Antarctic. He was born in England and was taken to Australia as a child. Mawson graduated from the University of Sydney. In 1907-08 he was with Sir Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic expedition. Mawson led Antarctic expeditions in 1911-14 and 1929-31. He was knighted in 1914. Mawson was professor of geology and mineralogy at the University of Adelaide, 1920-54.
