Wellesley College
Wellesley College, a privately controlled, nonsectarian liberal arts college for women in Wellesley, Massachusetts. On an exchange basis, some men from other colleges attend the school, but they are not admitted to degree programs. The library has several special collections, including the Plimpton collection of Italian books and manuscripts, chiefly of the Renaissance; Ruskin and Browning collections; and rare editions of English poetry and other works. The Jewett Arts Center, designed by Paul Rudolph, is a notable example of modern architecture.
Wellesley was chartered in 1870 by Henry Fowle Durant, who contributed more than $1,000,000. The college was opened to students in 1875.
