Montreal, University of, a Roman Catholic coeducational institution. It is one of Canada's largest universities and the largest French-language university outside of France. The university has an impressive location on the upper slopes of Mount Royal overlooking Montreal. The faculties, or schools, include: theology, law, medicine, arts and sciences, dental medicine, pharmacy, nursing, veterinary medicine, music, education, sciences, environment, graduate studies, and continuing education. Affiliated with the university are the Polytechnic School and the School of Higher Commercial Studies, both in Montreal, and a number of research institutes.

The University of Montreal was founded in 1876 as a branch of Laval University, and was opened in 1878. The school received a separate charter in 1920.
