Panay
Panay, , a United States gunboat that was sunk by Japanese bombers on December 12, 1937, during Japan's invasion of China. Three men were killed; three oil supply ships also were sunk in the attack on the Yangtze, 27 miles (43 km) above Nanjing. On demand of Secretary of State Cordell Hull, Japan made a formal apology, promised to punish those guilty, and agreed to pay indemnity, later set at $2,214,007.
