William F Dean
Dean, William F. (Frische) (1899–1981), a United States army officer. A major general, Dean commanded all United States forces in Korea early in the Korean War. His heroic defense of Taejon in July, 1950, won him the Medal of Honor. Dean was captured after this battle and remained a Communist prisoner throughout the war. Dean was born in Carlyle, Illinois. After graduation from the University of California he became an army officer. He commanded the 45th Division in Europe in World War II. He tells of his ordeal as a prisoner in General Dean's Story (1954).
