James Van Fleet
Van Fleet, James Alward (1892–1992), a United States army officer. As a four-star general, he commanded United Nations forces in the Korean War, 1951–53. Van Fleet was born in Coytesville, New Jersey, and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1915. He served in the punitive expedition into Mexico, 1916–17, and in France during World War I. In World War II he commanded the 20th Division, 1944–45, and the XXIII Corps, 1945–46. Van Fleet directed joint military aid groups in Greece, 1948–50, during Communist attempts to take over that country. He retired in 1953.
