Alfred M Landon
Landon, Alfred M. (Mossman) (1887–1987), a United States political leader and businessman. In the 1936 election, Landon, then governor of Kansas, was the Republican candidate against President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Landon and his running mate, Frank Knox, carried only two states, Maine and Vermont; his defeat ended his political career.
Landon was born in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania. He received a law degree from the University of Kansas in 1908. In 1912 he formed an oil-producing company. During World War I, he was an army officer. Landon became active in Republican politics in Kansas and in 1932 was elected governor. When his term ended in 1937, he devoted his time to business interests in oil, agriculture, and communications.
