James M. Cox

Cox, James Middleton (1870–1957), a United States newspaper publisher and public official. He was the Democratic candidate for President in 1920, with Franklin D. Roosevelt as his running mate. He was badly defeated by the Republican candidate, Warren G. Harding.

Cox was born in Butler County, Ohio. After working on the Cincinnati Enquirer, he bought the Dayton, Ohio, Daily News in 1898. He later purchased seven other newspapers. Cox served in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1909–13, and was governor of Ohio, 1913–15 and 1917–21. A supporter of the policies of President Woodrow Wilson, he advocated United States entrance into the League of Nations.
