Francis Daniel Pastorius

Pastorius, Francis Daniel (1651–1720?), a German-American colonist. In 1683 he led a group of Mennonites to America and laid out Germantown (now part of Philadelphia), Pennsylvania. These settlers were the first Germans in the colony. Pastorius served as mayor of Germantown until 1707 and was a member of the Pennsylvania Assembly in 1687 and 1691. He became a Quaker and was one of the most learned men in the colonies. In 1688 he and other Quakers signed what is believed to be the first protest in the English colonies against slavery.
