Peace of Ryswick
Ryswick, Peace of, 1697, a collective name for the treaties that ended the War of the Grand Alliance (also called the War of the of Augsburg). France had lost to the Holy Roman Empire, Spain, England, and Holland. The treaties were signed in the village of Ryswick (Rijswijk) in the Netherlands on September 20 and October 30.
King Louis XIV of France agreed to return most of the territory conquered in Germany and Spain after 1679, retaining only Strasbourg and Landau. Independence of the duchy of Lorraine from France was restored. The Dutch could garrison certain towns in the Spanish Netherlands, and France returned Catalonia to Spain. Louis also recognized William III as king of England. England returned Nova Scotia to France.
