Leopold V

Leopold V, (1157-1194), duke of Austria from 1177 to 1194. While on the Third Crusade he quarreled with Richard the Lion-Hearted, king of England, who then insulted him by tearing down his banner. In 1192, while Richard was returning north through Austria, Leopold took him prisoner and handed him over to Emperor Henry VI, a political enemy of Richard, who held him for a large ransom.
