Pedro
Pedro, the name of both emperors of Brazil. They are often referred to as Dom Pedro, Dom being a title of respect.
(1798–1834) reigned 1822–31. He was the son of King John VI of Portugal, who took refuge in Brazil during the Napoleonic Wars. John returned to Portugal in 1821, but Pedro remained in Brazil. In 1822 he declared Brazil's independence and became emperor. After an uprising in Rio de Janeiro in 1831, Pedro abdicated and returned to Portugal.
(1825–1891) reigned 1831–89. He succeeded his father, Pedro I, and was crowned at 15. Pedro II encouraged foreign investors to help develop the country. He worked throughout his reign to end slavery in Brazil, and a bill abolishing it was passed by the Brazilian legislature in 1888. In 1889, he was overthrown by discontented landowners and army officials and went into exile. Brazil then became a republic.
