Ibanez del Campo
Ibáñez del Campo, Carlos (1877–1960), a Chilean army officer and statesman. He was president of Chile, 1927–31 and 1952–58. Ibáñez was an army colonel when he was appointed vice president in 1927. He succeeded to the presidency after forcing Emiliano Figueroa to resign. Though he established some social and economic reforms, Ibáñez was forced into exile in 1931 for ruling as a dictator. Ibáñez was an unsuccessful presidential candidate in 1938 and 1942. His second term was marred by severe inflation and labor strikes.
