History of Northern Territory

The region was discovered by the Dutch in the early 17th century. British settlement began in 1824. The area was a part of New South Wales from 1825 until 1863, when it became a territory of South Australia. The territory was administered by the national government from 1911 until 1978, when it became self-governing.
