Hussein

Hussein I, (1935–1999), king of Jordan from 1952 until his death. He maintained close relations with Great Britain and the United States. Although often at odds with other Arab leaders, he took their side in the Six Day War against Israel (1967), an effort that cost his country its territory west of the Jordan River. During 1970–71, Hussein put down a revolt against his regime by the Palestinians and expelled their forces.

Hussein, a member of the Hashemite dynasty and the son of King Talal, became king after his father was declared mentally unfit. In 1978 Hussein married Elizabeth Halaby, an American. It was his fourth marriage.
