Re

Re, or Ra, in Egyptian mythology, the sun god and, beginning in the Old Kingdom, chief deity. From that time, the pharaohs were said to be descended from him. Later he was identified with the god Amen (Ammon) as Amen-Re.

The Book of the Dead describes Re as traveling in his boat across the sky each day, disappearing into the underworld at night. There Osiris, ruler of the lower regions, guided his journey down an underground river. In the morning Re returned above ground to light up the sky. Pictures of Re usually show him as a hawk-headed man crowned with a disc. In one hand he holds a scepter.
