Lake Titicaca
Titicaca, Lake, the largest freshwater lake in South America and the highest navigable body of water in the world. It lies on the Altiplano in the Andes, partly in Peru and partly in Bolivia, at an elevation of more than 12,500 feet (3,810 m). The lake is about 110 miles (177 km) long and up to 35 miles (56 km) wide and has an area of some 3,200 square miles (8,300 km2). It is drained by the Desaguadero River, which flows southeastward to Lake Poopó.
Lake Titicaca consists of two sections connected by the Strait of Tiquina. The northern and larger section, sometimes called Lake Chucuito, is about 700 feet (210 m) deep; the southern section is shallower. Regular boat service links Peru and Bolivia.
