Pichincha

Pichincha, pē-chēn'chä, a volcano in northern Ecuador, a short distance northwest of Quito. It rises 15,692 feet (4,783 m) above sea level. The last eruption was in 1881. In the Battle of Pichincha (1822), South American patriots under Antonio José de Sucre defeated the Spanish, freeing the territory that was to become Ecuador.
