The White Sea

White Sea, an inlet of the Barents Sea. It extends 365 miles (587 km) into the northern European part of Russia. The mouth of the White Sea lies south and east of the Kola peninsula and the sea attains depths of up to 1,100 feet (330 m). It is frozen over from September to May, but ice-breaking ships keep sections of the sea open during winter. A canal system connects the port of Belomorsk with the Baltic Sea at St. Petersburg, 350 miles (560 km) to the south.
