The Sea of Galilee

Galilee, Sea of, a freshwater lake in northeastern Israel, at the Syrian border. It is called Lake Kinneret by the Israelis, and is also known as Sea or Lake of Tiberias. In the New Testament it is sometimes called Lake of Gennesserat. To the west stretches the region of Galilee. The Jordan River flows southward through the lake, which lies 686 feet (209 m) below sea level. The lake is 13 miles (21 km) long (north to south) and 8 miles (13 km) wide at its widest part. On its western shore is Tiberias, a winter resort. Water from the Sea of Galilee is diverted for irrigation by an aqueduct system known as the National Water Carrier.
