Geography of Saskatoon
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, the province's largest city. It lies on the South Saskatchewan River, about 150 miles (240 km) northwest of Regina, the provincial capital. Saskatoon is the processing and distribution center for a large agricultural region. Flour milling, meat packing, and potash mining are the principal industries in and near the city.
The University of Saskatchewan, opened here in 1909, is the leading institution of higher learning in the province. At the Western Development Museum are displayed old farm machinery, vintage automobiles, and house furnishings and other items used by early settlers of Saskatchewan. The province's early history is the theme of the annual Pioneer Days Exhibition.
Saskatoon was founded in 1882 by members of the Ontario Temperance Society.
