Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, a community and former city located on Halifax Harbour. Dartmouth is primarily an industrial and a manufacturing area with large naval bases. The Bedford Institute of Oceanography is here. Settlement in Dartmouth began about 1750. Dartmouth was incorporated as a city in 1961, following rapid industrial growth that began during World War II. In 1996, Dartmouth merged with the cities of Halifax and Bedford and Halifax County to form the Halifax Regional Municipality.
