Geography of Annapolis Royal

Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, one of the oldest settlements in North America. The town of Annapolis Royal is located on the Bay of Fundy at the mouth of the Annapolis River, about 95 miles (153 km) west of Halifax. The French founded the settlement as Port Royal in 1605. It was seized by the English and restored to the French several times before Great Britain took permanent possession in 1710. Its name was changed in honor of Queen Anne. In 1713 Annapolis Royal was officially ceded to Britain in the Treaty of Utrecht. Until 1749 it served as the capital of Nova Scotia.
