Medicine Hat, Alberta, a Canadian city on the South Saskatchewan River, 165 miles (266 km) east-southeast of Calgary. The city lies above large deposits of natural gas. Products include pottery and other clay articles, chemicals, and hothouse vegetables. The city was founded about 1883 as a North West Mounted Police post. Its name refers to the headdress of an Indian medicine man.
