Geography of Timisoara

Timişoara, Romania, the capital of the Banat region of western Romania. It is the leading city in a rich agricultural area and is also an industrial center. Manufactured goods include processed foods and textiles. Numerous railways and highways and the Bega Canal make it a transportation hub. A polytechnic institute and a medical school are here.

In the ninth century Timişoara came under Magyar rule. It was part of Hungary from 1010 until it was taken by the Turks in 1552. The Austrians captured the city in 1716. Austria (later Austria-Hungary) retained control until 1919, when the western part of the Banat was ceded to Romania as a result of World War I.
