, Romania, the capital of Ploieşti Regiunea (region). It is at the southern base of the Transylvania Alps, 35 miles (56 km) north of Bucharest. Ploieşti is the trade, transportation, and manufacturing center for Romania's major oil-producing region. Oil pipelines lead to Bucharest and ports on the Black Sea and Danube.

Ploieşti was founded in the 16th century. Allied bombing raids in World War II damaged but did not destroy the German-held oil fields and refineries. The heaviest attack, in August, 1943, resulted in great losses of planes and personnel by the Allies.
