Turku, (Swedish: Åbo), Finland, a city on the Baltic Sea. It is a port, an industrial center, and the trading center for a large agricultural area. Its shipyards and tobacco factories are the largest in Finland. Finland's oldest city, Turku has many historic landmarks, including a medieval cathedral and castle. Institutions of higher learning include Turku University and ÅIbo Academy, a school for Swedish-speaking Finns. Turku was founded about 1150. It was capital of Finland from shortly after its founding until 1812.
