Geography of Tampere

Tampere, Finland, the nation's third-largest city. It is in southwestern Finland on an isthmus between Näsi and Pyhä lakes, about 100 miles (160 km) northwest of Helsinki. Tampere is a major industrial city, known widely for its excellent urban planning and architecture. Institutions include a university, a technological institute, several museums, and a summer theater. Tampere was founded in 1779; industrialization began some 40 years later. It was a scene of fighting during the civil war of 1918 and during World War II.
