Tungting Lake

Tungting Lake, also Dongting Hu and Dangting Hu, a lake in Hunan province, China, just south of the Yangtze River. Except when swollen by summer floodwaters, the lake is shallow and covers an area of about 1,400 square miles (3,600 km2). Two major rivers of southern China—the Xiang and Yuan—flow into Tungting Lake; several channels connect it with the Yangtze River. Rice fields in the area near the lake are among the most productive in China.
