Geography of Corregidor
Corregidor, a small island at the entrance to Manila Bay off the western shore of the island of Luzon in the Philippines. The area is about two square miles (5 km2). Corregidor was heavily fortified by the United States before World War II. After the fall of the Bataan peninsula to the Japanese in April, 1942, Corregidor became the last stronghold of United States and Filipino forces in the Philippines. General Jonathan M. Wainwright surrendered the island on May 6, 1942. The island was recaptured by United States forces under General Douglas MacArthur in March, 1945.
