Lake Turkana
Turkana, Lake, a lake in the Great Rift Valley of eastern Africa. It lies in northern Kenya with a tip jutting into Ethiopia. The lake is about 170 miles (270 km) long and as much as 30 miles (48 km) wide. Its greatest depth is 240 feet (73 m). Lake Turkana is fed mainly by the Omo and Turkwel rivers. It has no outlet, and its water is slightly salty. Count Teleki discovered the lake in 1888. The lake was originally named Rudolf, after the crown prince of Austria.
