Sheepshead
Sheepshead, a food and game fish of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America. Its black-banded body is a dark olive-green above and a dull silver below. The sheepshead attains a length of about 30 inches (76 cm) and a weight of about 20 pounds (9 kg). The chief foods of the sheepshead are shellfish such as crabs, mussels, and barnacles. Its prominent front teeth, which resemble those of a sheep, enable it to pick apart the shellfish and to scrape the barnacles off wharf pilings and rocks.
The sheepshead is Archosargus probatocephalus of the porgy family, Sparidae.
