Jewfish

Jewfish, or Spotted Grouper, a fish of the sea bass family. The jewfish is found on both coasts of tropical America and north in the Atlantic to Florida. It is a grayish-brown fish marked with black spots. The jewfish can be from three to eight feet (90 to 240 cm) long and can weigh 700 pounds (320 kg) or more.

The jewfish has a thick, heavy head and a rough-scaled body. It is a sluggish fish and usually lies on the sea bottom, where it feeds on smaller fish and lobsters. Like many other members of the sea bass family, the jewfish starts life as a female and later changes into a male.

The jewfish is both a game fish and a food fish.
