Sanderling
Sanderling, a shorebird. It is one of the sandpipers, but differs from the others in that it lacks a hind toe. The sanderling grows from about seven to nine inches (18–23 cm) long. Its bill and legs are black. In winter its plumage is white below and pale gray above. During the breeding season head and breast are a light chestnut. The sanderling breeds along the Arctic Circle and winters south as far as the Southern Hemisphere.
The sanderling is Calidris alba of the family Scolopacidae.
