Commander

Commander, a person who holds a position of authority or command. The rank of commander in the U.S. Navy is above that of lieutenant commander and below that of captain. The equivalent Army, Air Force, and Marine Corps rank is lieutenant colonel. As insignia, a Navy commander wears three gold stripes on each coat sleeve or silver oak leaves on the collar.

In the U.S. Army, an officer in charge of a company, battery, or large unit is called a commander, or commanding officer, regardless of his rank. A supreme commander is an officer in charge of all armed forces in a theater of war. The U.S. Constitution designates the President as commander in chief of the nation's armed forces.
