Datura: Understanding the Poisonous Trumpet Flower

Datura

Datura

Datura, a genus of annual or perennial shrubs, trees, and herbs found in the warmer parts of the world. The 15 species of this genus have a strong odor and are poisonous. They grow to a height of three to five feet (90 to 150 cm) and have large, coarse-toothed leaves that may reach eight inches (20 cm) in length. The trumpet-shaped flowers may be erect or may droop. They are colored red, white, yellow, or violet. Some species of datura are grown as ornamentals; some, such as the jimsonweed, as sources of medicines.

The genus Datura belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae.
