Columbine, one of a large group of very attractive flowers belonging to the buttercup family. The columbine grows in temperate regions. The stalk is usually about two feet (60 cm) high, and the flowers have five petals, lengthened into hollow, nectar-bearing spurs. The garden columbine of Europe has white or purple flowers. The wild columbine of North America has blossoms that are scarlet on the outside and yellow inside. The Rocky Mountain columbine is the state flower of Colorado.

The garden columbine is Aquilegia vulgaris; wild, A. canadensis; Rocky Mountain, A. coerulea. Columbines belong to the family Ranunculaceae.
