New York Botanical Garden
New York Botanical Garden, an institution maintained by a private corporation and New York City. Its grounds, open to the public, occupy more than 250 acres (1 km2) in Bronx Park. Much of this area is covered with forest, plant collections, and gardens. The many buildings include greenhouses, a laboratory, a museum, and a library. The herbarium preserves millions of plant specimens gathered from all parts of the world. A great many of these were collected by expeditions sent out by the botanical garden, mainly to tropical America.
The institution is also a leading research center for plant sciences. Laboratory research is conducted by its institutes of economic botany and ecosystems studies. The staff presents botany courses for children, college students, and other interested persons. Publications include scientific journals, books, and Garden, a bimonthly.
The New York Botanical Garden was chartered in 1891. In 1967 it became a national historic landmark. The Cary Arboretum, in Millbrook, New York, is a branch of the New York Botanical Garden.
