Gneiss
Gneiss, a coarse-grained metamorphic rock similar in composition to granite. Unlike granite, however, gneiss has wavy, irregular layers of light and dark minerals, such as quartz, feldspar, mica, and hornblende. Some gneiss is referred to as banded gneiss because of these layers.
Gneiss is widely distributed, but is most common in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada, northwestern Europe, South America, and southern Asia. It is used for building stone and paving blocks.
