Ira Remsen
Remsen, Ira (1846-1927), a United States chemist and educator. He was born in New York City, and studied at the Free Academy (now City College), at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, and in Germany. Remsen became professor of physics and chemistry at Williams College in 1872 and was named professor of chemistry at the newly founded Johns Hopkins University in 1876. He directed the chemical laboratories at Johns Hopkins, 1876-1908, and was president of the university, 1901-13. Remsen conducted research in all fields of chemistry. He and one of his graduate students, Constantin Fahlberg, discovered saccharin in 1879.
