John Howard Northrop
Northrop, John Howard (1891-1987), a United States biochemist. For his investigation of virus proteins and enzymes, he shared the 1946 Nobel Prize in chemistry. He isolated many enzymes and found that they are essentially protein in composition. Northrop was born in Yonkers, New York. He received his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1915. Northrop was on the staff of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now Rockefeller University), 1916-49, and was a professor at the University of California, 1949-70.
