Gilbert Newton Lewis: Pioneering Chemist & Valence Theory

Gilbert Newton Lewis

Gilbert Newton Lewis

Lewis, Gilbert Newton (1875-1946), a United States chemist. Lewis made important studies in thermodynamics and its application to chemistry, and he contributed to the theory of valence (the capacity of atoms to combine with other atoms). He collaborated with Irving Langmuir on a static theory of atomic structure.

Lewis was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts. He received a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1899. After teaching at Harvard and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he became professor of physical chemistry and dean of the College of Chemistry at the University of California in 1912.
