Douglas, David

Douglas, David (1798-1834), a Scottish botanist. He made several scientific expeditions to the United States and discovered the fir tree named for him (about 1825). Douglas first visited the United States as a collector for the Royal Horticultural Society in 1823. He spent 1829-32 in Oregon and California. Douglas sent back to Scotland more than 200 plants unknown in Europe.
